What is the name of this molecule? A straight chain of four carbons. There is a double bond between the second and third carbon when counting from left to right or right to left.

Do you know how to name hydrocarbons?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is this correct? 2-dimethyl 3-butane

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@aaronq I didn't do that well on my chem test covering this topic but I know the answer because of Google. Aaron, are you able to explain how to name them?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Typing "CH3CCCH3" into Google.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's how I found my answer. :p

So just 2-butyne?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

It is just 2-butyne or but-2-yne you work off the longest chain (in this case there is no ambiguity, but sometimes there is). After you've identified the main chain, you look for functional groups, like the triple bond, or an alcohol (if there was). Every example is a little different, so you just gotta do a few.
