As a mental math technique, you can count the points ahead or behind the requirement.  After the first test, he was fifteen ahead.  After the second, he had lost ten, so he was only five ahead.  That means he needs five less than the required average to make his minimum score.

I really think he should stop worrying about the minimum required and get busy studying.
