What is the equation of the ellipse?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Looking at the four vertices and finding the center, we have (-5,1) The ellipse must look like this (x+5)^2 and (y-1)^2 Discard the first 2 Distance from center to major focus (x-direction) is 8 The ellipse must look like this [(x+5)^2]/[8^2] and (y-1)^2 Distance from center to minor focus (y-direction) is 6 The ellipse must look like this [(x+5)^2]/[8^2] and [(y-1)^2]/[6^2] Looks to me like #3 is the winner. Okay, there's your free one. Now, you do one.

thank you!

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Where's yours?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean?

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Was that your last problem in this set? Surely there is more. Maybe pick one from the "Challenge" section? I want to see if you learned anything or gained any confidence.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes this was the last one. I kept getting a different answer each time I tried.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Ah, well. We'll see you next time, then. Remember to show your work. Making me do it all isn't good enough. I can't be there during your exam. :-)
