In the figure below, triangle ABC is similar to triangle PQR: A right triangle ABC with right angle at B and base BC is drawn. Length of AB is 16, length of BC is 20. A similar right triangle; triangle PQR, which is triangle ABC enlarged and reflected across a horizontal line, is drawn near it. The right angle is at Q. Angle A is congruent to angle P and angle C is congruent to angle R. The length of QR is 80. What is the length of side PQ?

@Zale101 @FaithSmith5 Could you please help?

OpenStudy (dan815):

similar triangles mean the angle are the same and the sides are proportional for example if k is some number... then triangle's sides on the right is k times bigger than triangles side on the left

OpenStudy (dan815):

you think u can find us this k number? how much bigger do you think the triangle on the right is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmm... 4 times bigger?

OpenStudy (dan815):

yeah good

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yay!! Sooo is the answer 64? :)

OpenStudy (dan815):

so look at how the triangle is named u can tell all similar sides from that ABC to PQR AB and PQ are in same position AB=16 PQ=4*16=64

OpenStudy (dan815):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:D Thank you so much!

OpenStudy (dan815):

you'r welcome
