I am so confused on this question please help! Justify the first step that David took in verifying that x = 5 is a solution for the equation 8x – 13 = 2x + 17.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

To check a possible solution, plug in the solution to the variable and check to see if what you have left after you simplify is true.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

For example, if you plugged in your solution and simplified your equation to 1=1 or -20=-20 or anything else that is true, your solution checks out.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

If you simplify the equation down to something that is not true, the solution does not check. For example 0=1 or anything else that is not true.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

But what I am explaining is the whole process. Do you have any information about what David's first step is?
