what does the prefix hypo mean?
under or below
Gk. hypo (prep. and adv.) "under" (see sub-). A prefix that means "beneath" or "below," as in hypodermic, below the skin. It also means "less than normal," especially in medical terms like hypoglycemia
Under
hypo- meaning low, under, beneath, down, below normal. Hypothermia is being below the temperature you should be at.
In my plant biology class I was forced to memorize Arachis hypogaea, the Latin name for Peanuts. But it's actually not too hard to remember since it's a very good descriptive name because the second name there is a combination of "hypo" and "gaea" which mean "under" and "earth". They do something weird; the flower of the peanut plant doesn't just turn into a fruit like most other plants. Instead the feather goes away and the stalk grows directly downwards into the ground, and the peanuts themselves actually grow underground, which is really weird by comparison to most other plants since peanuts are essentially the fruit of the plant, and most fruits grow above ground as you may or may not know. At any rate if that visual doesn't help you, then at least you have a bit of trivia to share with people.
