If a car travels 30 mi. north for one-half hour, 50. mi. east for one hour, and 30 mi. south for 30 min., what is the total distance the car traveled? Help pleaseee

hartnn (hartnn):

distance is easy. just add the 3 distances 30+ 50 + 30 if displacement was asked then you'd taken directions into consideration

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What do you do to know what direction to go in?

hartnn (hartnn):

as i said, to find the distance you don't even need the direction. distance is a scalar quantity, only magnitude is important

Ohh okay so on this problem what would I have to do? If a car travels 30 mi. north for one-half hour, 50 mi. east for one hour, and 30 mi. south for 30 min., what is the total displacement of the car?
