Is this equation linear or nonlinear? 4m^2 - 3m = n

Parth (parthkohli):

What is the degree of the variables in this equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have no clue. That's all the question has.

Parth (parthkohli):

No... I'm asking you what you think the degree of all variables is. In a linear equation, all the variables have a degree 1.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

o.O Never learned that they had degrees in variables.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The sum of all the exponents are 2 because there is only 1 variable that has an exponent. Correct me if I am wrong @ParthKohli

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So?.. Linear? No?

Parth (parthkohli):

Degree = highest power attached to a variable. In the equation 9x^2 + 5x + 8y^2 + 3y^3 = 4, ○ The highest power attached to x is 2, so the degree of x is 2. ○ The highest power attached to y is 3, so the degree of y is 3. In ALL linear equations, the highest power of ALL the variables is supposed to be 1.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH So nonlinear. Okay, I never knew that. Haha thanks.

Parth (parthkohli):
