That statement is true . There is another reason, carbon has the right electronic bonding pattern for supporting large chains, and thus the compounds necessary for life.
There is one other atom that will support life, although we know of no life using it (at least on Earth). That is Si, or Silicon, which has similar bonding pairs to carbon.
