There are actually two sex chromosomes - the X and the Y. Of those two, it's the presence of the Y that confers maleness. Individuals with chromosomal genetic disorders that confer only one X chromosome without an accompanying X or Y (i.e., they have only one chromosome and it's an X) are sometimes consider 'inter sex' but are closest to female in appearance.
