SMART CENTS FEEDBACK!! Guys tell me how much you love your new titles and the smartcents feature!
this is... assuming that everyone loves them :P for some reason there have been questions on how to re-lock titles...? I do not know why :/
I think it's nice that we have a way of distinguishing people who've earned different ranks in a subject; so it's definitely a step in the right direction! I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes and in the mean time I'll be saving up my intelligent pennies. I'd like to be able to display one title, say from Chemistry, while in Math.
I quite honestly find the titles way too hard to earn. The whole system is way too complicated. Needs a lot of work.
I agree with kai, it's definitely a step in the right direction, and would be nice to be able to choose a specific title to represent in all the sections. As blues mentioned though, I would like to see the medals differentiate in the earning amount, I mean, for other sections that aren't as poplar as the math section, the top titles should be worth about half the medals as the math section. I'll use what blues said, it took him years to get 1500 medals in a certain section other than math, and its tough to achieve that. So for some sections 1500 is like getting 5000 for math. As for @TQKMB mentioned, there's nothing complicated about the system, just do what you do normally. The top titles are there for the people who are willing to earn them, and for that they deserve it, because in a way when you earn that many medals you are also getting experience and that title some what represents that experience. Over all, I think the titles are great, just needs a few things fixed here and there. Nice work.
I think the new titles and SmartCents features are \(\normalsize\bf\color{red}A\color{gold}W\color{greenyellow}E\color{lime}S\color{cyan}O\color{blue}M\color{purple}E\color{magenta}!\) *^.^* Each title is a symbol of all the hard work of the user has done, and I believe they are a very nice reward for all the hard work that goes into helping users. (: @TQKMB, they are difficult to earn for a reason. By making it more difficult to unlock a certain title, it gives us all even more drive to give really thorough answers, and ensure the asker is understanding and learning. After all, that is what OpenStudy is for... Learning and helping. I have already seen major improvements in the thoroughness of answers. Also, by making it more difficult to unlock certain titles, askers can better determine which users will be more helpful. In conclusion, I believe that the new SmartCents and titles features will be a great success at improving OpenStudy, and making the site more fun! *^.^* Anyway, these are \(\normalsize\bf\color{red}A\color{gold}W\color{greenyellow}E\color{lime}S\color{cyan}O\color{blue}M\color{purple}E\hspace{5 pt}\color{magenta}F\color{orchid}E\color{red}A\color{gold}T\color{greenyellow}U\color{lime}R\color{cyan}E\color{blue}S\color{purple}!\) \(\normalsize\bf\color{black}A\color{black}N\color{black}D\) \(\normalsize\bf\color{red}A\hspace{5 pt}\color{gold}G\color{greenyellow}R\color{lime}E\color{cyan}A\color{blue}T\hspace{5 pt}\color{purple}S\color{magenta}U\color{pink}C\color{orchid}C\color{red}E\color{gold}S\color{greenyellow}S\color{lime}!\)*^.^*
I liked the whole feature but to be honest don't like this specific title i carry "BIG MAN ON HIPPOCAMPUS" :(
I like the titles, it shows the people who are both knowledgeable and helpful. I also agree that the top titles should be, by far, the most expensive to unlock, because they should require the longest tenure and\or greatest effort to earn.
I ♥ SMART CENT very much.
@sleepyhead314 u cannot re-lock the titles! you have to spend the smartcents wisely..:D its after all openstudy MONEY..:P
I like titles as a concept. They motivate some users. And they indicate which tutors are good at which subjects. I don't like my particular title for various reasons. I would rather be simply "biology tutor" than "big man on the hippocampus." As I discussed already, I think the medals needed for titles should be scaled differently in the different groups. And it should be possible to relock titles - it should not be one of life's irretrievable decisions. It's not fair to compare maths tutors to biology tutors and so on.
@iambatman I totally have to agree with that. I wouldn't mind earning 50 medals in like Math or English for a medal, but some of the other sections that are less popular. I would like to be able to get a title with maybe 10-25 medals/SmartCents instead of 50. Also it would be nice if we could use the medals/SmartCents we earned in a different section than the one we earned them in. Right now I have like 50-60 total medals, which gives me about 50-60 SmartCents. That would be enough to buy a 50 SmartCents title, its just I don't have enough medals in any certain section to purchase a title. It would be nice if we would only need a certain amount of SmartCents for a title, and not a certain amount of SmartCents and Medals. @Whitemonsterbunny17 I know there suppose to be hard to earn so the people who actually have titles earned them, but someone of the titles are harder to earn and even the easy titles you need 50 medals/SmartCents that's a little much. I do think it allowing people to want to earn more medals.(Including me I really want a title.) At the same time the titles are making people want to answer questions just cause they want a title, not because they want to help people. The whole system in general can improve it's a nice idea, but it needs some major improvements.
In practicality, it seems like getting 50 medals is a fairly reasonable first goal. 500 as the next one is also reasonable for the second goal. But 3,000 is absurdly high. It might be alright for math; but honestly who other than a few people are going to get the 3,000 award for this group? It's a little unnecessary if you ask me. I'm not exactly saying we should remove the 3,000 level title, but since the gap is so large, most people will have the second title. So essentially this equalizes 500 and 2000 in a single subject, when really this shouldn't be the case. Maybe by adding another title at around 1,000 or 1,750 or something is a good choice. Plus, it's tacky to see a girl's picture next to the title, "Big Man on Hippocampus".
Well said, Kainui.
I like it, it pretty fun :3 kinda motivates and titles are funny 。゚(TヮT)゚。 anyways its a good way to make ppl be more active (well that's what it does to me (¬‿¬) ) so i think its a good change and yeah I'm genius and walking periodic table - how can i not like it? O(≧▽≦)O
@TQKMB I don't agree with you. If you're willing to put the effort and actually teach in a way from others that makes you stand out, getting 50 medals isn't hard at all. @Kainui I was thinking about the "Big Man on Hippocampus" as well for girls lol, and also I agree with you once again.
well the human calculator didnt make me calculate like a calculator. but yeah, good bluff!
@iambatman its a lot harder than you might think. I try to answer questions the best I can, and every once in a while I might get a medal, but I've been on OS a few months and I never really answered questions for the medals. I just answered questions to help people. I never really cared about the medals. Now the medals are actually useful now and now you need medals to get titles, and I don't really have many medals.
@TQKMB "I just answered questions to help people." "the medals are actually useful now" Titles really aren't something I'd consider to be useful. They don't get you anything that having a high smart score won't get you. The thing that's changed is they have said, "Hey, let's take the number of medals they have, round it down to either 50, 500, or 3000 and then let's allow them to display it next to their name." So if you didn't care about medals before, this is really just a repackaging of the same thing and shouldn't cause you any problems. I think the important thing is that you are helping people because you either get pleasure out of it or you're learning through teaching. Otherwise you're just a free tutor.
well said @Kainui !
I know @Kainui , but the titles actually look cool and I want at least one or two maybe. The titles are useful in a way you can look at a person with a title and tell if they been on the site for awhile, if they answers are accurate for that section, etc...
some ppl have a lot of medals but no title, and that doesn't mean they haven't been here for as long @TQKMB actually smartscore is pretty much enough for us to get the idea if the person is been here long or not and can tell where the person is really good/ meaning which subject, since you can see the medals on the 'person's page for that subject
having titles is just kinda fun that's it
I know titles are just suppose to be fun. Sometimes you can look at a SmartScore and tell, but my SmartScore isn't as high as some of the other people on this site. It doesn't take much effort to get a 50-60 SmartScore. I got up to a 55 or so SmartScore within a day or two of being on the site and it has slowly gotten up in the past few months, I've been on this site. I have some medals, but not a whole lot most sections I have like 5 maybe a max of 10 or so in each, and then there is one section where I have 24 medals. So you really can't tell by my medals either. I have a few medals in a lot of subjects, not several medals in only one or two subjects.
well be more active there to show that you are good there thats it
@TQKMB that shows your diversity and it's a pretty good thing, also u should not worry about ur smartscore ryt now since u have answered a near about 400 questions. Be more active and try to answer as much questions u can. This will boost up ur medal counts and will allow u to buy titles too ! \(\color{green}{\huge\ddot\smile}\)
@Abhisar answers like EACH bio question, i'd say most active person, he is here like second month 99 smartscore, yeah pretty WOW but well he deserved it, as u go to his page you can already tell which subject he is best at, coz it shows no. of medals for each subject
I just got 99 last night and I've been here about 3 years. There's no rush. If you give quality answers that make sense, then your actions will speak for you and having a title or score or whatever means nothing. Imagine a person who just got their PHD in Physics comes on this site and starts answering questions. I don't think there's anyone on this site that can fairly say their higher smartscore or title really means anything, you know?
@Abhisar that's easy for you to say with a SmartScore of 99. I'm trying to boost my medal count and SmartScore still. I'm slowly working on it. How long did it take you to get a SmartScore of 99?
actually i noticed 1 thing it doesn't really matter how many medals you have what matters is that 'how many questions you answer/ask' meaning teach or learn smartscore depends on that only @Kainui im i right?
@Somy I so have to agree with you 1500+ medals @Abhisar in Biology WOW!! Wish I was that good in Biology.
lol ikr :) @TQKMB
well to be honest it took me 33 days ! and it was not easy i've answered nearly 2100 questions in this time but that doesn't matters @TQKMB , it's all about who devotes how much towards a work. as @Kainui said ss never shows a clear picture about the abilities of an user. i know @mrdoldum who is damn learned in field of molecular biology but his ss is low comparatively because he dont hv that much time to spend here. So if u judge him by that u'll be wrong !
Totally, I wish there were a more accurate way to show how smart people really are on here.
don't worry about medals and titles ! Those are free allowances of ur good and hard work! Just focus on helping people and u'll get them automatically !
true <3 just enjoy spending your time here/helping/learning :3 its fun on it's own :D
BTW!! 33 days really WOW!! that must have been a lot of work. @Abhisar
@Abhisar is completely right.
I will @Somy Wish I had more time to spend on this site
\(For~Me,~it~doesn't~work~!!,~Unfortunately,~I~Can't~unlock~rest~!!\) Ref: Picture.. @Kainui @Abhisar @blues @iambatman @shrutipande9 \(May~be~because~God~doesn't~want~me~to~Have~much~badges~!!\) @Somy
@Koikkara u have 48 medals in mathematics, 38 in chem and 13 in history ! for unlocking any title uh need to have atleast 50 medals in that particular subject. This is why only biology section is yet unlocked for u
Lol, its funny... btw i already lost interest with badge decorations...!! \Nice to Meet You \\
\(\huge\color{red}\bigstar\) \(\huge\cal \color{black}{Nice~to~meet~you~too~josh ! :P}\color{red}\bigstar\)
eeww... ugly, make it look good with color combinations lol
@TQKMB There's no really way to show a person is smart, even IQ exams are bogus. School exams also don't tell you if the person is smart or not, in a way it just shows you that you're willing to put the effort, well that's how I look at school, even the doctor with lowest mark is still considered a doctor right, and maybe he will be the best of all his class? If you've read Einsteins biography, you'd see he barely passed university, all of his professors considered him a nimwit lol, but at the end of the day it didn't matter because now he's considered one of the "smartest" people to have ever existed, he accomplished this through his work. My best advice is, just study as much as you can and put in the effort, if you try your best you will be able to fully understand a concept and can explain it to someone who needs help, and maybe that person will consider you "smart" and it will give you some self gratification. SS and titles don't tell you anything about the person, trust me I can think of a few with 99, that aren't really "smart" but have achieved it. If you're only after titles and a 99 ss to get recognition, I honestly wouldn't consider this site for you then. The goal of this site was to help users, but it has been slowly evolving to a place that wants you to get these fake achievements that don't actually help the person in any way. These kinds of questions often lead us no where, just focus on what you need to maybe explain better or to even strengthen yourself, everyone can be a "smart" it just requires patience and practice. I can say I would've still been here even if there were no titles or SS.
@TQKMB it's okay even if it's little time that you spend here because you are still staying here and helping some ppl out :)) that's what matters & medals don't matter anyways :)
im simply not unlocking any titles .... it might be fun for the kids, but at my age it just feels a bit ... pointless.
Touché @amistre64
@abhisar Thanks for the compliment. @kainui Well, I don't have my PhD yet, but I am set to graduate this spring. I am a Mycologist that is a evolutionary molecular systematist. Do to the nature of my work, I am also very experienced in computer hardware (we do a lot of heavy computational Biology), keep up in math pretty well (mostly statistics), and actually quite a bit of physics. In fact, a third year grad student in my lab is working on light and pileus formation. I keep up in comparative genomics as well since the lab is heavily involved in the fungal 1000 genome project. So, my little score is not high, but it means nothing to me. I have a few medals and zero questions. I think the zero questions is part of the reason my score is low (if it is, I don't really pay attention). Never-the-less, I don't care. I am on here to help; that is it.
it sucks
i dont like the fact that once you get more then one title none of them show up
Just would like to say that these new features are FANTASTIC! Thank you, OpenStudy team for continuously enhancing this website.
I like smart cents so much that y'all should all give me a medal (:
I just joined the site not to long ago so I don't know how I feel yet :P but I think the concept of different titles makes sense
I'm loving it!!
I don't even have a title. Some of the people I helped does not give me medals. WHat are smart cents anyway? It is a good idea though.
Well, Anti, it is a new thing. And yes, people forget to medal. However, if they participate in being tutored, try to remember to medal them. That can help spread the idea of medals being good.
ok thanks...
Medals earned in a study group translate to SmartCents. You can unlock titles in those study groups with those SmartCents which you earned.
Is there a title for physics now?
I think so, though you can check.
Nope, nothing yet :<
Only a few areas to start. As time goes on, they will expand. Part of the ballancing act is what number of medals are: Easy Hard VERY, VERY hard (Impossible unless dedicated to that topic)
thanks...
For example, it was proposed that music be done on a floating scale. (/snicker)
i don't like it at all.... i think it is stupid... BUUUT thats just meh!
About this new titled unlock thingy.. I clicked unlock, but what does it do after that?
Tima, you unlocked Human Calculator. Look at how you show up in the Mathematics section.
oh now I get it. Thanks E.M (:
I like the smart cents idea :) I also like to respond to old posts :P
@TheSmartOne I noticed that LOL!! This post was from 7 months ago, and your responding to it. Anyways glad you like the smart cents idea. :)
I like to go read old posts :) ;) But this time I wasn't looking through shruti's questions... lol xD
Glad to see you still active :) @TQKMB This post was made like a month before I joined OS xD lol
@TheSmartOne Really? How is that that you've been on the site for probably 6 months and have a higher smart score than me? Like I always thought you were on the site longer than I was. This post was created 7 months ago, and I was on the site a few months before it was posted. I've been on this site for almost a year now. If I believe so, this month will be 1 year. Anyways I like reading old post also. It's like a time machine, so I can see how I answered questions in the past.
I joined August 1st but I asked a question and then went inactive. And then after September 2014 I went active and started increasing my SS :) And then finally in December 2014 I reached 99SS :) Enough of spamming this post :P lol
SS has to do with how active you are. The more you answer is the big one. Asking helps, but not as much as answering.
