They say that the most effective way to save the shrinking forest is the creation of extractive reserves, which permit only the sustainable use of the forest. In this way local people can still make a living from the forest without causing irrevocable damage. There are now more than 20 extractive reserves in the Amazon rain forest. They have enabled thousands of people to live and work in harmony with the forest, harvesting fruits, nuts, plant oils, and latex. At least now there is a guarantee that some of the magnificent rain forest will be there for future generations.
