According to the last paragraph of the passage, how has creating extractive reserves helped to conserve the Amazon rain forest? It has created space to build farms and roads. It has increased the number of animal species. It has made deforestation unnecessary. It has reduced the frequency of forest fires.

Alarmed by the rapid destruction of this vital natural resource, environmental organizations have been calling upon governments to protect the remaining forest. They argue that although the commercial use of the rain forest is necessary, its destruction is not. They say that the most effective way to save the shrinking forest is the creation of extractive reserves, which permit only the sustainable use of the forest. In this way local people can still make a living from the forest without causing irrevocable damage. There are now more than 20 extractive reserves in the Amazon rain forest. They have enabled thousands of people to live and work in harmony with the forest, harvesting fruits, nuts, plant oils, and latex. At least now there is a guarantee that some of the magnificent rain forest will be there for future generations.
