If is completely simplified to 2x^ay^b + 4x^cy^d, where a, b, c, and d represent integer exponents, what is the value of a? _______
OpenStudy (rockstar0765):
can't help you their a little bit to complex for me
sorry
OpenStudy (anonymous):
lol thts fine @rockstar0765
OpenStudy (rockstar0765):

@marissalovescats can u plz help?
OpenStudy (marissalovescats):
Okay so when you divide those, a will be the exponent of x
OpenStudy (marissalovescats):
I think it looks like it will just be x which means x^1 so a would be 1. But I have to leave so I dont have time to divide it with you I'm sorry. But @jim_thompson5910 can probably help you
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Ok thank you though
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
4xy^3 over 2xy^2 will divide to 2y
since
4/2 = 2
x/x = 1 (effectively goes away since 1*x = x)
y^3/y^2 = y^(3-2) = y^1 = y

You can write 2y as 2x^0*y and you'll see that a = 0
jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):
you don't even have to worry about the other division since you're just concerned about 'a'
