An archway will be constructed over a walkway. A piece of wood will need to be curved to match a parabola. Explain to Maurice how to find the equation of the parabola given the focal point and the directrix.

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

Well if it's an archway it takes the shape of this |dw:1403149297258:dw| Which is an x^2 parabola opening downward

OpenStudy (the_fizicx99):

-x^2 **

OpenStudy (marissalovescats):

So what means the y point will be negative. So I believe if we have a focus of (0,-4) this means the directrix at y=4 -x^2=4py x^2=4(-4)y x^2=-16y -1/16x^2=y I believe would be the equation. I could be wrong I don't 100% remember this topic. If I'm wrong I'm sure @tHe_FiZiCx99 can confirm/deny lol

Thank you so much!
