Solving Linear equations with substitution. Can anyone teach me.
i can
please help, I understand what to do but I just don't know how to get the equation to solve it.
2x - 3y = -2 4x + y = 24 ---------- you mean problems such as this one ?
yup @kelliegirl33
@kelliegirl33 I thought you didn't go on OS anymore...
nvm
my computer is acting up..I hope it doesn't disconnect. The first thing you have to do is to isolate a variable. In this problem, the easiest variable to isolate is y. Do you understand ?
yup.
2x - 3y = -2 4x + y = 24 take your 2nd equation and isolate the y 4x + y = 24 -- subtract 4x from both sides y = -4x + 24 now we substitute this back into the first equation 2x - 3(-4x + 24) = - 2 have I lost you yet ?
not yet
2x - 3(-4x + 24) = -2 --- distribute through the parenthesis 2x + 12x - 72 = -2 -- add 72 2x + 12x = -2 + 72 -- combine like terms 14x = 70 -- divide by 14 x = 5 now sub 5 in for x in the other equation 4x + y = 24 4(5) + y = 24 20 + y = 24 y = 24 - 20 y = 4 check... 4x + y = 24 4(5) + 4 = 24 20 + 4 = 24 24 = 24 (correct) any questions ?
thats alot
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh OKAY THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!
yep
I just put in all the steps. It is really not that hard. Just be sure and keep track of your signs. It is a good idea to check your answers as well.
Thank you so much @kelliegirl33
no problem...any more problems with them and you can just tag me :)
@kelliegirl33 thankkk youuuuu
