In algebra, why do you think that you are given many problems to solve that aren't really "real life" problems? For example, "Twice the sum of a number and 5 is 24. Find the number."

why don't you think it is not a real life problem? I give you the same situation: Your grandpa with his friend together invested in a project. You don't know how much your grandpa's part was but you know that his friend's part was 50,000 dollars. And double the total amount was another friend, B. You know that B's money was 24 million dollars. After years, your grandpa passed away; his friend asks you to take his money back. However, he said that the money must be divided by 2 because there were 2 members only. One more thing, now the money is 100 billion dollars. You don't agree but you not know how to find out how much your grandpa's money was (at the present time) . You need know how to calculate this kind of problem to not lose the money. Right?
