In humans, how many chromosomes does each sex cell contain? A. 22 autosomes plus either an X or Y sex chromosome B. 23 autosomes plus either an X or Y sex chromosome C. 44 autosomes plus either an X or Y sex chromosome D. 46 autosomes plus either an X or Y sex chromosome

OpenStudy (blues):

Do you know how many chromosomes each normal cell in the human body contains? As in an ordinary bone cell, muscle cell, etc?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A 12 pairs and 1 single to determine sex

OpenStudy (blues):

I don't think so, Turhtle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's 23 so choice B

OpenStudy (blues):

No - you see, the sex cells contain 23 chromosomes total.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Human sex cells or gametes have 23 chromosomes....all the rest of your cells have 46..... You received a combination of 23 chromosomes from mom's egg and 23 chromosomes from pop's sperm to make up your first cell when conceived....

OpenStudy (blues):

Exactly as Vickie says: And one of the options specifically involves there being 23 chromosomes in the sex cells...

OpenStudy (babyelm99):

The answer is A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

IT'S FREAKING A I WAS RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes on yahoo the question was answered by my mum ive learned a lot from her

OpenStudy (babyelm99):

thats what turhtle said!!! you guys said turhtle was wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's A because there are 12 pairs of the chromosomes but 1 X left over for another X or Y to join it. XY if it's a BOY and XXfor girl.

OpenStudy (blues):

DeadTurtle - yes, the answer is A. But *not* from 12 pairs and one sex chromosome. Sex chromosomes contain *one copy only* of each chromosome. It is the somatic cells, the ordinary body cells like bone and muscle, that contain two copies of each chromosome and two sex chromosomes.

OpenStudy (babyelm99):

thats what turhtle was saying!!!!! OMG

OpenStudy (blues):

No, it wasn't what Turtle said. Turtle said "12 pairs" when in fact there are 22 unpaired chromosomes. Besides, 12 pairs would be 24 chromosomes. It is a very, very important distinction.

OpenStudy (babyelm99):

no she meant you get 12 chromosomes from each parent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

besides this question is easy for me ive always found the human body interesting so ive been studying into it and please calm down the question is answered it is over turhtle said it wrong but now its fine we all learn something new everyday :)

OpenStudy (blues):

No, you get 23 chromosomes from each parent.

OpenStudy (blues):

You have a total of 46 chromosomes. 23 come from Mom. 23 come from Dad.
