A survey of 240 10th grade students in a local high school found that there were 140 girls and 100 boys in the grade. Of the 140 girls , 100 preferred gym class while 60 preferred art class. Constrict a data table for this data and answer this question: If you pick someone who prefers art, what is the probability that they are a girl?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. 3/5 B. 1/4 C. 1/6 D. 2/5

OpenStudy (dan815):

... "Of the 140 girls, 100 preferred gym and 60 preferred art..." 160 not equal to 140

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Dan is right, that is not possible.

OpenStudy (dan815):

How can this question be answered.. It's missing information...

OpenStudy (dan815):

we need a way to know how many people are taking art in total

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ive gave you all of the info that i was given

OpenStudy (dan815):

Which is not gien to us

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you sure that it is not 40 girls? 60 is impossible.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 40 im sorry lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok. One sec.

OpenStudy (dan815):

Can you paste the question as it is, i feel like something else is missing for sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its not and no i cant paste it i onyl got the 60 wrong

OpenStudy (dan815):

okay just pick D) and call it a day

OpenStudy (anonymous):

draw a table with 4 boxes boys girls -------------- | 60 | 40 | art -------------- | 40 | 100 | gym -------------- take how many boys chose art, 60, and the total number of students who were surveyed, 240, and divide the two 60/240 ...... to get

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ill just repost it and tag yall i could have missed something

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright... I did that the best I could lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I solved for boys oops

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So its 40/240

OpenStudy (anonymous):

of the 100 boys, 40 preferred gym class while 60 preferred art class

OpenStudy (dan815):

cant be solved we need to know how many boys are taking art if any

OpenStudy (anonymous):

of the 100 boys, 40 preferred gym class while 60 preferred art class

OpenStudy (dan815):

sigh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

60 boys in art.

OpenStudy (dan815):

Now there we go.. now you have enough info

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now put it all together.

OpenStudy (dan815):

40+60=100 40/100 = 2/5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry about that guys i really am sorry. lot on my mind.

OpenStudy (dan815):

suprisingly the answer was D)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Youre fine \and yeah hes right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not gonna give either of you metals because I cant give you both metals

OpenStudy (dan815):

lol I said pick D) anyway.. up there something inside me told me that they wanted to make the question to make the answer D)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Dan gives me a medal You give dan one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That could work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohk that works

OpenStudy (dan815):

This reminds me of the story where a woman's baby was stolen by another woman.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yea ik that story and they said they would cut the baby in half but they didnt because the real mother wouldnt let that happen

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dan, medal me

OpenStudy (dan815):

lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There we go

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well after that cluster of a problem... hahah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ha ha dont worry i have more that yall can solve and get more metals i have 4 more problems like this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@DW101796

OpenStudy (dan815):

umm are you learning anything though?

OpenStudy (dan815):

The point is to understand how you can begin to solve this stuff on your own.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i really am this isnt the only time i will have to do this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Summer school classes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. @DW101796

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But i had this same thing come up and it asked If you pick someone who prefers gym, what is the probability that they are a girl? but 100+40 is 140 and that divided by 140 is 1 which isnt an option @DW101796

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the answers are A. 5/7 B. 2/5 C. 3/5 D. 2/7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its B
