male chromosomes + female chromosomes = 39 +39 = 78 chromosomes

Skin cells are called as somatic cells. Usually in animals they are diploid i.e contain two sets of identical chromosomes.

Gametes like ovum & sperm contains only one set of chromosomes and hence are haploid.
