A city park has an architectural pillar in the shape of a triangular pyramid. The shape of the base of the pillar is an equilateral triangle. The dimensions of the shape of the pillar are as attached below. The park plans to repaint the lateral area of the pillar. The area of the pillar that will be repainted is _______________ ft^2.

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

The lateral area is the surface area of the pyramid that does not include the base. So, you will want to paint the 3 triangles. WHat you need to know is the area of a triangle: \[ Area = \frac{b\times h}{2}\]. where \(b\) is the base and \(h\) is the height. That is the area for 1 triangle, but there are 3 of them! So once you have the are for one triangle found, just multiply that by 3. We can do this since the base is an equilateral triangle, so all the lateral triangles are identical

OpenStudy (domebotnos):

Is the base 4?

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

yes

OpenStudy (domebotnos):

(4*9/2)*3 (36/2)*3 18*3 54 is that it?

OpenStudy (kirbykirby):

yes :)
