Explain how energy is transferred in a food web.

OpenStudy (dan815):

The plants are using the energy being generated by the sun, and all their good old energy storing processes. There are animals which eat those plants, and then there are other animals which eat those animals which eat the plants, as well as possibly eating other plants. Also there are humans which eat all sorts of things.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A FOOD CHAIN shows how each living thing gets its food. Some animals eat plants and some animals eat other animals. For example, a simple FOOD CHAIN links the trees & shrubs, the giraffes (that eat trees & shrubs), and the lions (that eat the giraffes). Each link in this chain is food for the next link. A food chain always starts with plant life and ends with an animal. There cannot be too many links in a single food chain because the animals at the end of the chain would not get enough food (and hence energy) to stay alive. Most animals are part of more than one food chain and eat more than one kind of food in order to meet their food and energy requirements. These interconnected food chains form a FOOD WEB.

List and describe two ways that scientists can date fossils found in the earth.

OpenStudy (dan815):

google it

OpenStudy (love.kat123):

One way is by using relative dating which is determined by comparing it's placement to fossils in other layers of rock to tell how old or young it is compared to the other ones. Another way is readioactive dating and this can be done by calculating the age of a sample based on the amount of remaining radioactive isotopes it contains.

Compare and contrast the terms genotype and phenotype. Describe at least two ways that they are alike and two ways that they are different.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@dragonknight326 love kat is correct

OpenStudy (love.kat123):

Similarity 1. both depend on inheritance and environment. 2. both include expressed genes. Difference 1. genotype can be inherited while phenotype can not. 2. genotype includes expressed genes and non-expressed genes while phenotype includes expressed genes only.
