At the top, there is a piece of mail. It's between the "OpenStudy" icon and the "Find More Subjects." When you get notified, your message will show up here. There are various kinds of notifications, too, such as friends (to the right) and notifications (to the left). When you click this piece of mail, you can choose to respond to a message, or create your own message by entering a recipient. 

You’ll receive notifications when someone replies to your question/ the question you've commented on. You may also receive notifications when you're tagged in a post, but you can change those settings if you like (click on "Settings" on the top right corner of the page).

Click on there name and click on the send message button, it's next to the fan button.
