When you multiply the slope of the given equation times the slope of the line parallel to it, you get -1. The slope equation is y=mx + b The slope in the equation given is 3. So 3 times the slope of the parallel line is -1, or 3m=-1 To find the slope of the parallel line solve for m. Once you have solved for the slope, m, of the parallel line, substitute m and the point (3,1) into the slope equation, and solve for the new b value.
