a common example for tessellation  is the tiles on your floor...
covering an entire plane with a shape repeated over and over again without any gap is tessellation....(see pics by M.S.escher for tessellation patterns)

@victorial67 A transformation that you're concerned with is much simpler than that. It's like a reflection, translation, or rotation.
