Will Medal! :) There can be more than 1. Which statements describe factors that led to the decline and defeat of the Aztec Empire? Choose all answers that are correct. A. The Aztecs welcomed the Spanish with gifts. B. The Spanish took Moctezuma prisoner. C. The Spanish attempt to recruit allies among the people the Aztecs had conquered failed. D. Smallpox weakened the Aztec's ability to resist. E. The Aztec Empire had superior weapons and firepower but waited too long to take action.

B, C, and E are all correct statements, but B and C had nothing to do with why the Aztecs were defeated. (Superior weapons, particularly cannons, did play a role). The Aztec neighbors and subjects hated them, so Cortes's army ended up much larger than the Aztec army. The final battle was bloody and they completely leveled Tenochtitlan in hand-to-hand combat. It lasted months, and smallpox played a major role in weakening the Aztecs. It also played a role in the Spanish consilidation of power after the war had officially ended.
