I need help with a quick question. I will medal the person with the best answer. Thanks! How many ways can 5 students sit in a row of 8 chairs for a photograph? 6,720 40 56 120

OpenStudy (beccab003):

Can you tell me how you did that? Just so I know?

OpenStudy (beccab003):

I know how to solve these problems but I can't tell the difference between permutation and combination.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Sorry that was not the one that I was trying to say.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

I was trying to say that since there are 5 people and are only 8 chairs, there will be at least three chairs left over. So maybe we can do: \[8! \div 3!\]

OpenStudy (beccab003):

That is how I thought the equation was supposed to look like.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

So did that work actually?

OpenStudy (beccab003):

Oh I solved it. So it would be 6,720. Right?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Yup!

OpenStudy (beccab003):

thanks!!
