There are 100 students in South High School. South High School offers only Chinese and Spanish. There are 8 more students in Chinese than in Spanish, and every student takes at least one language. If 37 students take only Spanish, then how many take both languages?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1403396164390:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and the total ia 100, solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops but then you are forgetting the fact that 8 could be from inside the middle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer isn't 18.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The answer is not 18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

WE know charmie

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i am just saying

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OOps can u help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it might be 100- 56

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why?? chinese is 8 students more than spanish. x is from both. so if spanish only is 37, then spanish is = spanish only + spanish with english = 37 +x , so at that time, english is 37 +x +8 I don't know why the answer is not 18. If it is not that, I don't know how to solve @zepdrix

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops the problems is the fact that the 8 could have been from the middle so than we would have to add 8 to both sides

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Anyone think it could be 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well it might be 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To me, there is no "might be", it should be "it is"|dw:1403396677369:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@dan815 come here to convince me how to get 9 for this problem, please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well while you are waiting may you help me with a question

OpenStudy (dan815):

Okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am sorry, I have to have my mentor @dan815 solves this problem first.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (dan815):

So lets see what we know Chinese And Spanish 2 languages Chinese = Spanish +8 All kids take atleast 1 language, and All kids =100

OpenStudy (dan815):

37 take only spanish therefore 63 include spanish + Chinese and Only Chinese

OpenStudy (dan815):

now its an algebra problem where we break up 67 so that we have 8 more in chinese than in spanish

OpenStudy (dan815):

err 63*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@dan815 onnce you are done may you help me with a question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

on dan's behalf "Yes, I will" hahahaha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (dan815):

If 63 taken Spanish and Chinese then let X be the people taking both 63-x=37+8 x=63-8-37=18

OpenStudy (dan815):

hmm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oky!! both you and me got 18 hehehe...

OpenStudy (dan815):

Let me think about something

OpenStudy (dan815):

okay yeah that is right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dan!! Venn is my strong.!! no need to think more.

OpenStudy (dan815):

I know I want to stay away from drawing Venn Diagrams though

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but look at our pics, I can't stop laughing. hahaha

OpenStudy (dan815):

2 babies helping this post

OpenStudy (dan815):

My baby is younger

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah... hahaha

OpenStudy (dan815):

OOPS how do i draw this conclusion with math only

OpenStudy (anonymous):

37+x +37+8=100

OpenStudy (dan815):

This is how i think of it! There is x amount of people that Take chinese + spanish so the +8 cant contribute there There fore +8 must exist with Chinese only group so 37+8=45... Therefore 45+37+x=100, x=18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

babies forever, hahaha...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A pencil manufacturer has a certain tolerance for the actual lengths of the pencils it produces. After the pencils are manufactured, a 1.1 centimeter eraser is added to one end of the pencil. The total length of each pencil must be between 12.9 cm and 13.3 cm. Write an inequality representing the possible lengths of the pencils before the erasers have been added, and then find the lengths.

OpenStudy (dan815):

let P be length of pencils 12.9<P+1.1<13.3 11.8<P<12.2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dan, you think of this. 37 is spanish only so 37+x is spanish this amount +8 is chinese if 8 in both, then that 8 is spanish, right? so that 37+8+x = 45+x is spanish and the english student is 45+8 +x = 53 +x , at that moment x = 2 so the total spanish become 47 and the total english is 55 , it exceeds 100

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1403398378891:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

chinese will be 37+8+x+8 =53+x and solve for x we get x =2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so, spanish is 37+8+2= 47 english 8 more than spanish = 55 How??

OpenStudy (dan815):

nvm "OOOPS" i get it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

elder baby shows something to younger one. hahaha. perfectly ok. You continue helping him on the second one. Ok?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank uou!!
