Which has correct punctuation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I was late to lunch, there was a traffic jam. or I was late to lunch; there was a traffic jam.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It would be the second because if you say the first part, "I was late to lunch" *pauses* "there was a traffic jam".

Right- I know that semicolons work only when the two parts of the sentence can stand as two thoughts alone... so it would be the semi-colon one. There's also "I was late to lunch there was a traffic jam." but that's more of a run-on sentence, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct, it's a run-on sentence.
