Today they have way more power. few examples:
WARFARE they have the power to annihilate entire NATIONS its very scary to think about. the presidents now have the possibility of killing many people and also passing many laws such as gay marriage that could cause uprisings in the entire country. also they could take away guns and this could potentially cause people to try and overthrow the government and make the government allow us to keep our rights.

that is just a STARTER you should be able to figure some more on your own

@Trizzy-T  yes, @KingGeorge makes a very good point. you got lucky i was helping in math right now and i just sorta have a thing for history so i felt like pitching in
