Many immigrants experienced discrimination from Americans who questioned their loyalty to the U.S. Large numbers of immigrants were deported by the U.S. as suspected agents of foreign governments. Immigrants became the largest source of members in antiwar groups banned by the government. Neighborhoods populated by immigrants became crowded with new refugees arriving from Europe.
