which of the components directly leads to lower amounts of oxygen carried by red blood cells in the body? 1) nicotine 2) tar 3) carbon monoxide 4) carcinogens Note: you can choose more than 1 choices :)
What do you think it is? Why or why not? It would be easier to tutor you if you explained what about the question is giving you trouble.
I am not really sure though... However, I do know that carcinogens cause cancer and carbon monoxide is a colourless and poisonous gas caused by incomplete combustion of carbon.
Oxygen is carried by haemoglobin present in the blood. Haemoglobin is Heme (iron) containing globulin protein. Both oxygen and carbon mono oxide bind to this heme component of haemoglobin. Affinity of carbon dioxide towards this component is much higher than oxygen. Thus carbon monoxide readily binds with haemoglobin to form a compound known as carboxyhaemoglobin preventing oxygen to combine with it and form oxyhaemoglobin. This reduces the oxygen availability or amount of oxygen carried by RBC
I see... Thanks so much again! :D
Got it ?
yup :) Thanks
