What is the difference between a positive and negative association ?

When X and Y variables are under consideration
Whether correlation between two variables is positive or negative depends upon the direction of change of the variables.
If both the variables vary in the same direction there exists positive correlation BETWEEN THE VARIABLES.for ex.
X: 34 56 76 85 96 ... increasing
Y: 44 67 89 90 99 ... increasing --- OR
X: 65 54 44 34 23 ... decreasing
Y: 86 67 53 41 21 ..... decreasing
If both the variables vary in the opposite direction there exists negative correlation between the variables. for ex.
X: 64 89 98 120 142 ... increasing
Y: 112 100 86 76 44 .. decreasing --- OR
X: 300 245 198 165 100 ... decreasing
Y: 123 156 234 356 432 ... increasing
