In the 1920s, black intellectuals took inspiration from their African heritage and, through their works of creativity, provided racial uplift for their own communities. The Harlem artists, known as the New Negro, demanded respect from those that continued to harbor racist ideas and their efforts became known as the Harlem Renaissance.
