The length of a rectangle is 9 in and is dilated to 6 in. What is the scale factor?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tkhunny

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

First off, do you know what dialation is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes!

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

OK, so, they have one start and one resultant measure. When you dialate, you multiply. So, do you know how you would set that up in an equation with an unknown?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not really, honestly.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

If \(a\) dialtes to \(b\) then the basic formula is \(ax=b\). Then sove for x. Put your numbers in and do that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9x=6? Meaning x=2/3

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Yep! Which would be the dialation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Got it! Thank you so much!

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Or scale factor.
