The profit earned by selling a quantity of x + 2 of a product is given by the expression x4 − x3 − 24. What is the average profit per unit of product sold?
It wants you to divide: \(\Large\frac{x^4-x^3-24}{x + 2}\)
Dividing \(x\) into \(x^4\) and \(x^3\) will SUBTRACT the exponent by 1. Then divide 2 into -24.
So what is your final answer? @nmoss
What's \(2~~\div -24\)? What's \(4 - 1\)? And what's \(3 - 1\)? @nmoss
Wouldn't it be -24 divided by 2 which would be -12? 4-1 is 3 and 3-1 is 2
Im so lost..
That's correct. So your exponents will be \(x^3\) and \(x^2\) and the end of your expression will be '\(-12\)'.
would it be x3 − 3x2 + 6x − 12?
No.. where does \(3x^2\) and \(6x\) come from? The only terms you have now are \(x^3\), \(x^2\), and \(-12\). Just combine them all!
because that's the only option it gives me that has -12 in it.
The answer should be \(x^3 - x^2 - 12\).
it doesnt give me that option..
