@hawaiiangirl Hmm, in rereading it may not be kidneys. They do start removing as much water, but the, strictly speaking, do not "retain" water. Muscles are a big water retainer, I think the spleen does as well. The large intestines keep quite a bit of water, and finally the bladder is actually the organ that evolved for this. You don't see bladders in species that have maintained a aquatic life (for all life I am aware of).
