For example, environmentalists are all claiming that tons of carcinogens were dumped into the environment and everyone is going to die. The Chinese government is claiming it was only water and carbon dioxide, so no big deal. Somewhere between is the truth.

You will need to find sources from more impartial sites. For example, by using Google Scholar you can find about better sources. Not all of these will be accessible or useful, but it is going to be more factual than news.

From those, you can find authors and researchers to look for. Someone who paid for and read one of these reports may have made a free news article based on it. So you can get the information second hand and have a more impartial view than the extremes of the environmentalists and government.

Once you know what has really happened, it is easier to look at the political impact.
