Describe the structures of proteins and nucleic acids, and then explain the relationship between these two molecules within a cell .

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

Proteins are large biological molecules consisting of one or more chains of amino acids.

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

Nucleic acids are linear polymers (chains) of nucleotides. Each nucleotide consists of three components: a purine or pyrimidine nucleobase (sometimes termed nitrogenous base or simply base), a pentose sugar, and a phosphate group.

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

Proteins differ from one another primarily in their sequence of amino acids, which is dictated by the nucleotide sequence of their genes, and which usually results in folding of the protein into a specific three-dimensional structure that determines its activity.

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

Basically Proteins are chains of amino acids, nucleic acids are chains of nucleosides (base+sugar+phosphate), and the specific sequence of nucleic acid results in the specific sequence of amino acids in the protein, ultimately determining its shape and function.

Your awesome, thanks again

OpenStudy (praetorian.10):

no prob, youre awesome too

@tikiataylor @PRAETORIAN.10 Proteins are never a sinlge amino acid. Also, DNA is not linear but helical. All proteins have a 3D structure. It is nucleotide, not nucleosides. Amino acids are made of a N containing amide and a COOH (or it was before bonding to another amino acid). The may or may not have side groups. DNA has sugars and phosphates. The nucleotide sequence directly or indirectly code for the proteins.
