Order of Operations (PEMDAS) 1. Parenthesis 2. Exponents 3. Multiplication and Division 4. Addition and Subtraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Using this as a reference and looking at your expression which do you think will be last?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hint: Numbers above mean the order they come in, from first to last.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

addition

OpenStudy (anonymous):

???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or Subtraction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

erm.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ty.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Addition or Subtraction are our last order of operations so we see which of those comes first.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@MikaylaSkyy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Addition is first so that is not the last operation, the one that comes last is the last operation to be performed which is subtraction.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

No, not quite. You need to understand PEMDAS correctly. Order of Operations 1. Parentheses 2. Exponents 3. Multiplication and Division in the order they appear from left to right 4. Addition and Subtraction in the order they appear from left to right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i get it now.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am very glad.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

With the correct interpretation of PEMDAS, let's look at this. The first operation is the division inside the parentheses. Incidentally, the parentheses are unnecessary in this case. \(20 - \color{red}{(54 \div 6)} \cdot 2 + 1\) \( = 20 - \color{red}{9} \cdot 2 + 1\) \( = 20 - 9 \cdot 2 + 1\) Now looking at the remaining expression, we find a multiplication. That goes next. \( = 20 - \color{red}{9 \cdot 2} + 1\) \( = 20 - 18 + 1\) Now we have only an addition and a subtraction left.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

According to PEMDAS, we do the addition and subtraction, from left to right in the order they appear. That means the next operation is the subtraction. \(= \color{red}{20 - 18} + 1\) \(= \color{red}{2} + 1\) Finally, we do the addition. \(= 2 + 1\) \(= 3\)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

As you can see, the last operation done was the addition.
