when juliet awakes, what does Friar Laurence do

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In Act IV Scene I, the Friar told Juliet to take a potion that would make her appear dead for 42 hours so she wouldn't have to marry Paris. He had arranged for Friar John to send Romeo word of the plan. That way, Romeo would be there as she woke, and she then would be taken off to go live with Romeo. But when it comes time to take the potion, in Act IV Scene 3, Juliet has some reservations. First she worries that the potion might not work, but she keeps a dagger by her in case that happens. Then she worries that the potion might be poisonous, but she dismisses that as something which the Friar would not do. Then she worries that Romeo might not get to the tomb in time to take her away and there she'd be all alone with a bunch of rotting corpses. She takes the poison just to stop thinking about this possibility. Friar Laurence proposes to Juliet that she drink a vial of distilled liquor (it's a drug) that would put her into a sleeplike trance for 24 hours so she won't have to marry Paris the next day. The drug is meant to make the drinker look, feel, and seem dead, not even breathing at all.
