The table below represents a linear function f(x) and the equation represents a function g(x): x f(x) 0 30 1 32 2 34 g(x) g(x) = 8x - 25 Part A: Write a sentence to compare the slope of the two functions and show the steps you used to determine the slope of f(x) and g(x). (6 points) Part B: Which function has a greater y-intercept? Justify your answer.

I think I know the answer. So, can you just double check?

OpenStudy (triciaal):

I would find the eqn of the line for f(x) or at least the slope parallel lines have the same slope perpendicular lines the product of the slopes is -1 f(x) you found the slope g(x) you are given the eqn of the line the slope is given = 8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, What I said was: Part A: The point-slope form of a line is y = mx + b. Here, f(x) has a slope of 2 and g(x) has a slope of 8. Thus, g(x) is the line with the steepest slope. Part B: Here, f(x) has a y intercept of 30 and g(x) has a y intercept of -25. Therefore, f(x) has the greater intercept.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would that be right?

OpenStudy (triciaal):

slope = change in y / corresponding change in x for points on a line (x1,y1) (x2,y2) slope = (y2 -y1)/(x2-x1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

exactly. That's how I solved it. Is my answer wrong...?

OpenStudy (triciaal):

good but not complete. Part A asked to show the steps. I didn't do the calculation for the slope f(x) so I don't know yet if it was 2 How do you justify your answer for Part B? no I don't think your answer is wrong I think you need to put more to justify getting most of the 6 points its worth I haven't done the calculation so I don't know if your numbers are the same

OpenStudy (triciaal):

i would use the point where they meet to do the comparison

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you mind walking through it with me? The hardest part for me is the explanation.

OpenStudy (triciaal):

that's not my best thing but based on the question there are certain things I would look for as mentioned put in Part A the details of how you found the slope when you did the comparison of the slopes did you just read the slope from each function or did you find where they met and compare ? with this in mind reread the question

OpenStudy (ageta):

Question 2 f(x) has a y intercept of 30 and g(x) has a y intercept of -25... so f(x) has the greater intercept. hope this helps
