Can someone help me understand the instructions for this assignment?? Satire criticizes human foolishness in order to change it. In doing so, satire often emphasizes incongruity. For example, Saturday Night Live often pointed out the incongruity of President Gerald Ford s apparent clumsiness. It seemed incongruous that the President of the United States, who wielded a firm hand over the mightiest military force in the world, would almost fall on his face while exiting an airplane. Select a song that expresses a definite mood, such as sentimental. Over this music, superimpose a narration of stark reality. This may be original or an interweaving of TV and radio newscasts, advertising jingles, newspaper articles, etc. The objective is to superimpose commentary over music with which it is incongruous.
first off... what does incongruity mean?
Your assignment is talking about one element of satire, which involves combining two things that don't seem to agree with each other - the example is President Gerald Ford: he was the most powerful person on the planet, yet he would sometimes slip and fall exiting Air Force One. Chevy Chase on SNL took that to an extreme, and portrayed Gerald Ford as a President likely to fall down at any second. Now you have to come up with a music-news combination that just doesn't fit. The example is sentimental music - love songs, essentially - so think about what news stories wouldn't fit with that, or take a different kind of music and go from there.
Incongruity is when two things do not match up. @Danielle_Ello
