is this good ?? Relationship Standards in Today’s World In the play, The Importance of Being Earnest, there are several silly standards that a potential mate must meet, some even as silly as having a certain name. Even to this day, people still have some outrageous standards they want their partner to meet or they might not even think about being with the person; which sounds ridiculous but is very true. One of the many standards most people have today is body image. People want their partner to look a certain way, even if they might not look that way themselves. For example, most men want thin, tan, and drop-dead gorgeous girlfriends, even if they are pale, overweight, and might not be considered a ten. On the flip side, women also want the perfect guy with an eight pack when they might not be particularly fit. Basically, people often want to walk around with some “arm candy” on them since it helps you look good as well. Another standard people have is the way others dress. People think if you don’t wear a certain brand of clothes then you’re not cool enough for them to date. These people always have the newest, top of the line clothing that’s often overpriced and isn’t even that serious if you really think about it. People often look down at the ones who dress differently and don’t conform to what some would say is the “norm” and people don’t want to date someone that might be considered weird because they fear they will also get that reputation. A final standard that has been a major issue in the past and is still a problem today is race. Two people might really like one another but might not be allowed to date simply because of the color of their skin. Other people will absolutely refuse to go outside of their race to date because they think it is wrong. It’s crazy to think that with how much the world around us has advanced and all that we’ve created and conquered that race can still be such a touchy subject even in 2013. If a couple that is two different races walks down the street holding hands people still might look at them funny or make comments, and that’s just sad. In conclusion, people will always have silly standards and stupid reasons to not date a certain person that they could potentially fall in love with. Whether it’s as little as the name of a person or as complex as a race; we should be able to overcome these standards and look at the beauty within the person rather than what is on the outside.
