please explain how to get the answer

i would highly recommend just making the yellow shape into two different boxes independent of the other because it is easier to solve so (hold on a sec plz im attempting to draw this for you)

if you cant see it let me know and ill try to draw it out here for you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright, do you have your two different rectangles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if so then area is length times width so easiest first is (2)(x+3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the area of the first is 2x+6. now for the second one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you know the length of the "red" line is 2 and there is an x on either side of that space so (4x)(x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x^2 is your answer there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now just add the two together so 4x^2+2x+6 would be your answer
