Write the equation for the area (A) in terms of length (l) of a playground if the width (w) is one half as long as the length (l). You do not need to solve the equation.

Write the equation for the area (A) in terms of length (l) of a playground if the width (w) is one half as long as the length (l): This is just practice in Algebra. If we represent the length of the playground with l, and the width with w, and are told that the width is half as long as the length, then we can eliminate the variable w and have to worry only about the variable l (for length). Assuming that the playground is a rectangle with four 90 degree interior angles, then Area = A = l*w = (length of rectangle)*(width of rectangle. "the width of the playground is half as long as the length" translates into what algebraic expression? Try writing a formula for w, please.

w = _____________

? I don't quite understand hehe

OpenStudy (mathmale):

we're going to do some mathematical translation here: "the width (w) is one half as long as the length (l)." Let w = width and l = length. w = (1/2)* l, or w=(1/2)*l, or w = l/2. Your choice. Same meaning. The area of the rect. is A = length * width. Symbolically, A = l * ( ) choose one of the formulas i developed for w and insert that formula (but not the letter w itself) into that set of parentheses.
