Why did the British government relax rules regulating trade for the American colonies in the late 1600s? A- The British hoped the colonies would become wealthier and spend more on manufactured goods from Britain. B- The British were afraid the colonists would revolt because they wanted a form of self-government. C- The British wanted to weaken Britain’s trade rivals, especially the Netherlands. D- The British wanted the colonists to develop a form of self-government similar to the representative body in Britain.

Hi(:
Navigation Acts (1660): acts passed by the British parliament increasing the dependence of the colonies on the English for trade; these acts caused great resentment in the American colonies but were not strictly enforced.
England regulated American trade as it best suited them. The purpose of English colonies in America during this period was to better the standing of the England itself. England wanted the raw materials and food North America offered. Linked to this, England needed the North American colonies in order to profit from the export of English products across the Atlantic. It was therefore in England’s interests to allow American trade to flourish. Providing North Americans with markets in England also spurred the construction of more merchant vessels that were useful as battleships to the crown in times of war. Making trade attractive to North Americans was basically beneficial to the English politically and economically. The regulation of this trade also responded to the influence of competing foreign powers.
