Don't know if you still need the information.
It depends if you have reference points on the survey side. If so, you can set up a base line and locate (x-y) by triangulation, as long as the station is visible.

If the river is not wide, station is accessible, and theodolite's distance range is not exceeded, measuring the distance will give additional information for error adjustments.
Also, try to keep angles to around 60 degrees if possible to minimize ill-conditioning in solutions of triangles.
