Umm.....ATP stands for adenosine triphosphate. 
When the bond is broken (between the 2nd and 3rd phosphate groups) It releases energy for the cells to do their jobs (:

@sunshao1 It is not just aerobic respiration.  ATP is used as the energy source for all life, even obligate anaerobes.  It made by glycolysis, fermentation, and aerobic respiration.  Glycolysis and fermentation do not need O2.
