Light travels at different speeds in different media. When the light enters into a medium, it gets slowed down or speed up depending upon the density of the new medium.

According to the principle of least time(by Farmat),light ray follows the path that takes shortest time to reach from a point to another. That's why the light ray bend in a new medium(geometrical optics)
