difference between spring balance and electronic balance

OpenStudy (aaronq):

The spring balances makes use of the force due to the gravitational acceleration on an object, it measures the distance of the stretching of a spring. There are different types of balances, they all employ a reference object for comparison to the sample being weighed. So, for example, if you took both devices to the moon (where the acceleration due to gravity is less than on earth) and you measured your weight there, the spring balance would give a lower reading on earth (less gravity) but the balance would read the same value as on earth (because of the reference object). There are other, more accurate, types of balances that use other forms of reference, like the quartz crystal microbalance that make use of the change in oscillation frequency in the shear plane of a crystal as mass is added onto the weighing plate.
